Wasted! Film Event

In partnership with the Heartland Film Festival, Second Helpings hosted a screening of Anthony Bourdain's documentary "Wasted! The Story of Food Waste." The film focuses on the consequences of a food system that throws away almost 30% of what it produces. Second Helpings needed a way to capture the energy that the audience would have after seeing such a stirring film. One Development team member came up with the idea to give out popcorn bags with some sort of take away information. In response, I designed and wrote the copy for the label below, which I printed and attached to hundreds of bags.

The event was the highest attended film of the festival, and every popcorn bag that was made was given away. The response was extremely positive, people loved the gift and the opportunity to respond to the film's challenge.

We also wanted to provide those who didn't grab a popcorn bag with some "next steps." For those who had ordered a ticket through Second Helpings, I designed the email on the left. For those whose emails we did not have, I designed the postcard on the right. Since the film was organized into a pyramid of food reduction, I used the same organization to show all the different ways Second Helpings is fighting waste in the community. That combined with actionable next steps ensured that attendees had every opportunity to engage with Second Helpings' mission.
