WFYI Show & Event Logos

WFYI Public Media is the central Indiana affiliate station for both NPR, PBS, and a newsroom of local journalists and storytellers dedicated to representing the Central Indiana community. Through my work there as Design Strategist, I developed logos and brand identities for many shows, podcasts, news series, events, and community initiatives: giving each its own flavor while remaining in the WFYI family of colors, fonts, and tone. Below is just a sampling.

All IN is a statewide talk show with a daily rotating panel of guests and experts. It has a warm, inviting tone but needed to be flexible enough to deal with serious statewide issues. Thus, the palette of deep navy and friendly blue, the Indiana outline within the quotation marks, and the open bounding of the whole logo.

Hosted by the Avenue’s own Butch Slaughter, Echoes of Indiana Avenue is a weekly audio documentary diving deep into the cultural achievements of Black artists and musicians in the almost-forgotten cultural epicenter of Black Indianapolis. For this logo, the iconic Walker Theatre facade was a major inspiration, as well as the neon of the neighborhood’s heyday.

After years of hosting a formal gala as an annual fundraiser, WFYI pivoted to an event that better represents the fun, informed audience of public media:. Thus Trivia Night was born! And I was able to develop a look from invitations to swag to directional event signage–all inspired by the golden era of television game shows, and the energy and playfulness of public media superfans.

Small Studio Signal Boost is a companion program to WFYI’s popular Small Studio Sessions, this weekly radio show centers on local musicians–and is hosted by three local musicians themselves. Being a “spinoff” show, the team needed to keep the Small Studio logo incorporated for brand equity’s sake, but I translated that with a new energy that kept the emphasis on the distinct portion of the show’s name and gave the logo a slick, forward-motion feel.

News & Brews is a recurring event series for public media superfans (or anyone who pays attention to the news!) The events are always held in a brewery, and their audience is more likely a radio listener than a TV watcher, hence the headphone concept. News & Brews was one of my first interactions with WFYI before working with them, so I loved giving the series a new look. Maybe I’ll see you at a future event!

Local Frequency is an initiative of WFYI to play local music during the breaks in 90.1 FM ‘s airtime. The designs were used to solicit local musicians to submit their songs and be featured on the radio. The look needed to be energetic, Indiana-specific, and clearly WFYII.
